Pennsic Day 14

In the middle ages there were many ways to say goodbye to a loved one who has passed.  The way that seems to   most well known is the Viking being burned while sent down steam in a Viking boat.  The SCA has a tradition where a small Viking ship is made and people who have lost a loved one since the last Pennsic can paint a small shield to be attached to the ship, set sail onto the lake at the campground and burned.  At some point people watching can call out the name of the person and say their name and may choose something quick to say about them.

This year,  in the Barony, there were two people who passed away just this summer. Both of these people were honored by having something to represent them on the Viking ship.   There were three of us who went together to witness this and after calling out our Baron's name (other friends called out the other person's name) I found that the person I was standing almost next to was live streaming this memorial and that the real life wife of our baron was watching from home.   This was so surprising and good to find out.  We got to say hello to her and goodbye to her husband.

My happy for today though is that our current Baroness allowed me to try on the hats she brought to Pennsic.  There were twelve hats.  It was a fun thing to do and this was a way that we remembered the Baron who also loved hats.

Some hats.
